Quail breaking necks

Hi,
I'm new at this and I've heard that since quail tend to fly they can break their necks in cages. Have any of you had this problem? If so how do you prevent it? I've heard that you can use some type of padding and it's important to have cages that are a specific height. Does anyone know the specifics on this? I'd like to keep as many quail alive as possible that I get.

You can either keep them in cages that are 12" or less high, keep them in an aviary that's high enough for them to fly in, or purchase tiny little helmets for them.

I've seen them in pens 2 feet high several times and they didn't seem to have an issue. The good thing about it is that, if it does happen, those genetics are removed from your breeding pool.

Thanks for the insight. I think I'll try to keep the cages at 12". It seems that could be difficult for egg gathering, but I'll see what I can get to work. It's all in the design, I expect.
