quail breeds together

If you put different breeds within a species together, such as Texas A&M Coturnix with regular wild type Pharaoh Coturnix, you will definitely get crossed chicks.

I don't know which species are capable of interbreeding. The New World quail are not too closely related to the Old World quail, so I would guess (just a guess) that they would have great difficulty crossing. I have heard that Murray McMurray does offer a bobwhite x coturnix cross hatching egg, so it is possible apparently. Within the groups, some of them perhaps could cross -- usually things in the same genus can cross -- probably California x Gambels is possible.

speces will interbreed.

now, different colors of speces will interbreed as well, but many do that striving for specific colors --- such as a&m with golden--- both are coturnix speces.

Remember, the Japanese coturnix is ONE breed. There are color varieties of that ONE breed and you can house them together since they are the same breed just different colors.

Now, if you are striving on producing true colors of the breed, you will need to individualize each color variety.
