Hi, I am thinking about buying 5 or so quail. I have an old cage from a chinchilla and I was wondering if I could keep them in there. This is the cage..

Of course I will provide them protection from weather and predators. I am more concerned with if they will be okay based off the size and set up in the cage. If they will be how many coturnix could I keep in the cage? Or is there anything I can do to make the cage more quail friendly? Thanks!

If so I'd say it wouldn't work.. quail do like to fly and once they do so in this cage they will hit their heads on the roof and it will hurt them a lot and might even kill some of them. I would suggest building one and making it only about 1 or 1.5 feet tall. Or you could always build an aviary like I did, they love it!

Oh and those ladder type things will just get in their way, they are birds that love to stay low, on the ground.

What if their wings are clipped? That would prevent them from flying right?

The cage still wouldn't work out due to the size. With Coturnix quail you can keep 1 bird per square foot. New world quail such as Bobwhites or Gambels require about 4 square feet per bird. In that cage you wouldn't even be able to hold 2, let alone 5. Well technically you could fit them in there but they would become very territorial and you will be breaking up A LOT of fights, not really worth it.
