Hello all - I want to ask a new question in a separate thread ...

I'm thinking of building a quail pen inside my existing chicken run. It's large enough, and it's all enclosed with to protect against raccoon. I heard that quails and chickens together can be problematic because they can create diseases for each other. Where can I find out more info about this?

My plan is to have a raised pen above the ground, so at least the chicken can't get too close to the quails. But if I just let the quail poop to fall on the ground (probably dusted with DE), the chickens may just "forage" and eat the poop. They'll try anything. Will that be a problem? What kind of disease should I watch out for?

What if I build a poop tray for the quails to collect before it drop to the ground. Will this be OK? Or are there other chicken - quail problems I need to watch out for?

Thanks for any help!

Just having your quail that close to your chickens they will catch any disease that your chickens have. Mostly coryza and MG. The fact that people know their quail can get fatal diseases from their chickens yet still do everything they can to house them together is one of the reasons why i'm about done helping people on this fourm. This question gets asked almost daily it seems like. Please learn to use the advanced search. I apologize that you are the one that asked the question for the last time I want to hear it. I mean no offense but I care that people don't wantonly kill their birds either.

Edited for an extra apology>>sorry<<, please advanced search "can i keep quail with chickens" and it will give you an idea of how many thousands of times this questions gets asked. Also follow the link in my sig to see what it looks like when quail get coryza from chickens.

I've been saying this for more than a year, and even collected more than $8 every time somebody posted asking to keep chickens and quail over the past year. Now, if you won't take Dons word or my word for it, allow Alexandra Douglas aka, Stellar put this to rest in her recent article. This article even debunks using the broody bantam for hatching quail eggs. She's written a book titled, "Coturnix Revolution", and it is a fascinating read (I highly recommend this book). She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Sciences, with an emphasis in Pre-veterinary Medicine, and Poultry Science emphasis, so I think she's more than "quailified" to recommend against keeping chickens and quail together.

I kept quails and chickens together for a while and they did not get sick but when the chicken grew up it started to try and eat the quails head and i had to separate them.

Wow such a strong reaction for an innocent question, but I needed that. Would not have taken you more seriously otherwise. I guess I got romanticized by this lady who got her quails hatched and raised by a bantam chicken. I got 3 Sebright bantam chicks and was hoping to do the same. And then found out that Sebrights aren't good mothers, so I thought just raise quails in the cage inside the chicken run - convenient with all around protection and waterline nearby. Oh well.

Sorry I asked. Should have done more research.

Now I have to figure out a spot far away from the chickens to build the quail pen. I do let my chicken roaming the yard from time to time, so may have to give up on the quail idea :-( Too bad I already bought all the parts to build an incubator for quail eggs.

Thank you for the bad news. Better hear it now then later.

Sorry for the bad news. He didn't eat all of their head and they did survive. Quails are VERY hardy when grown. The problem chicken was a rooster he was big so bantams might work and he was fine with them until he started to crow. I was indignant because those quails had helped look after him when he was little. I have heard of bantams raising quails so that might work. And that rooster was a bit dumb. He used to try and walk though a glass door to get to us. He never learnt.
