quail chicks singing

I have some 1 1/2 week old coturnix quail chicks and I keep hearing a ''song'' from the brooder that sounds like a turkey hen mating call..... is that a baby roo sound?

What kind of quail do you have? Different ones make different sounds. I've heard of ones that young making calls, but haven't witnessed it myself.

They cheep a lot as youngins and sometimes make a sound that sounds
like a cellular phone taking a picture. I'm not sure what it is you are
hearing.

they are coturnix.....

the sound just reminds me of a quieter turkey hen call - you know the sound that turkey hunters make to call in the toms? They cheep too (a LOT) - but the call I hear once in a while is very different.......

I call it yelking they do that when they are scared or cold


I can take a coturnix chick out of the brooder right now if i put it in my hand, it will stand up on his legsup high and yelk (yelk like a turkey) LOL

yelking, that's a good word for it! that's a lot what it sounds like..... they aren't cold though - and the noise is when nobody is near, but I guess they could still be scared from noises........

as they get older only the hens seem to do it when they are scared i've noticed (but roos as babies do it too so sorry no way to sex there... I named my one roo "Cricket" because his yelking sounded similar to a cricket creeking lol).

heres a yelker LOL for some reason the vid didnt mesh with the sound as you can see lol! This one also sounds more like a cricket...and oddly enough it's young cockerel! hmmmmm hens sound like yelks roos sound like crickets i'll have to test this theory on chicks as they grow and see if I can notice a difference and if it always leads to the same conclusion!
