I was advised to start this thread and seek answers. Today is day 18 of incubation for my jumbo coturnix quail, lock down was 3 days ago. We are using a homemade incubator. Just a styrofoam chest with a black light. Last incubation went ok I guess. It was my 1st and I had 39 eggs hatch of 100. This time I didn't notice the stryofoam water channel we used last time had a leak. All the eggs were wet for possibly 2 days. We got them dry and put back, we had 1 egg hatch 2 days ago but he still had yolk sac attached. Sadly he passed an hour ago as he never absorbed it. We had another egg hatch yesterday but we had to hatch him ourself after 12 hours of no progress. We have 2 more eggs I found with a pip but no signs of life beyond the pip. Is our hatch possibly ruined? I should probably mention too, that after the 1st egg started hatching I pulled corks for him to have air, when I did so we noticed a very bad smell that was from the rubber sink mat we tried in this bunch but not the last. We removed it because we were afraid it was toxic and put the shelf lining we used before back in

I don't know how and don't know how to start a thread without going to my introduction mail I got when I joined. There I just hit post a new thread

Wet eggs easily grow bacteria, and also possibly gain moisture inside making the air cell too small.
You might get a couple to hatch out but it’s probably going to be a poor hatch rate.

I've not had any more hatch. I'm guessing I should just shut the incubator down then? It's day 19 and no signs of life in the incubator

You can give them another day if you wish, but they are probably done.
Sorry about your hatch, I’m learning by failure as well. It’s a hard way to learn.

Yes it is. Guess there is no need in running the incubator anymore. Last question if anyone can help. I started gathering eggs 2 days ago for hatching again. They have been on my table turned 3 times a day. How many days can they stay room temperature? I will incubate tomorrow, but is 3 days room temp too long? Also my 1 hen has been off of antibiotics for 2 weeks. I know I still can't eat the egg, but can I incubate it?

Check out the articles that @TwoCrows has on quail. Super helpful and insightful. I have a forced air with an auto turner and my first hatch with the new bator was a disaster. Our cat knocked the darn thing over. Probably the being wet (as mentioned) caused poor aircell growth. It's possible they drowned from the moisture build up when they pipped.

I talked to TwoCrows last night. That's who advised me to start a new thread. I have turned off the incubator now, I'm sure you all are right and I won't get any more hatch. I was surprised I got 2 as I felt even putting them in lockdown was probably a wast of time
