I've had the pleasure of seeing a mother quail completely fool a cat that was sneaking up on her brood. Of course other birds use the same trick. She put on a really good act of being helplessly crippled and the cat thought for sure it had a meal within reach. How that quail knew just how close to let the cat get before she pitifully scrambled just out of reach was amazing to watch. She lured the cat into a different neighborhood and then returned. The little ones (really, really tiny) came scrambling out of there hiding place in some rocks where they were absolutely invisible and followed her away.
