I came out this morning to check the quails first eggs and force my love on them to find this poor little lady missing half her beak! I assume I’m going to have to put her down 😭. But this is my first time owning quail, do you think it was caused by cannibalism or something else??? And what’s the best way to put her out of her misery. The whole top of her beak is gone so I assume she can’t eat or drink.

We took care of her. I think she got it stuck in a piece of hardware cloth that is under the pen. There was a tiny bit of blood on it. But no beak. I fixed the area. But now I’m down to 3 girls and 1 boy (we started with 5 girls). Will I be needing to get more girls?? How to i integrate them into the flock?

You should get a couple more hens if you can. Integrating can be a challenge. I had a hard time with my last couple. I ended up keeping the newcomers in a bin inside the pen with the established birds for a week. When I let them out, I watched for any bullies. I had two both times. I put the bullies in the bin inside the pen for two days, and when I let them out they behaved themselves.

I have used this with good results. When you spray them down and think you have got them good enough give them a little more. You want to make sure you get them all coated with the magic water. It also helped to take all the quail out of there normal cage and spray down the inside a bit with the solution, then spray each quail really well as you put them back in and end it with a good extra bit of spray on all the birds once there all in. Then keep an eye on them for any bullying and if you do see some spray the bird being bullied. Take the bully out and leave them separate for a short time then coat em with another does of spray and toss em back in.
