we all have to kill a bird some times, its the humane thing to do, i had to kill a bobwhite today because it broke its wing, and i have had to kill a chick with deformities as well, there are two things i am going to say, if they arent strong enough to make it out of the egg on thier own, majority of the time they will not be capable of making it once they are out, and secondly that bird is to damaged to try and save, if you fix the neck it will have diformed feet, the best way is to go out and get a flat headed shovel and end its pain before it worsens.

We knew this was part of the job when we decided to hatch eggs... but I'm not looking forward to it. If there was any chance of recovery when would we know that it had passed? We've been giving him vitamins via syringe based on some info from the web.

I would wait before you cull him. I have a valley quail that hatched exactly like this one, and he grew up to be healthy and strong. His neck is still off to the side a bit, but it doesn't affect him at all. In fact, he is one of the more dominant quail in the covey. Just make sure the chick can eat and drink properly and give it a chance to survive.

Based on the advice we found in some other posts we've been giving "Noodle" baby vitamins via eye dropper. I'm not really sure that is making any difference, or maybe its just age, but its doing great!

It no longer holds its head upside down, just slightly to the side; it eats and drinks effectively on its own.

He's still a little gimpy, I suspect thats permanent - he holds his neck a little bent so his head is left-of-center. But he not longer has any tendency to inverting it, or even looking to the side, and is a happy bird. For the record we're using liquid baby vitamins, couldn't find fancy poultry/quail stuff.

I have been bribing them all with mealworms from my hand to try to combat the valley's natural flightiness... hes happy to partake
