My 1.5 year-old celadon quail hen is in pretty bad shape. She’s lost a lot of her feathers, looks listless and losing the ability to walk.
We learned we have Mareks and ALV last summer, and while my chicken losses were and still are minimal, I did lose a half dozen quail until I moved them out of the yard and onto my porch. We did a necropsy on one, and that turned up ulcerative enteritis.
So fast-forward to now, this celedon has been very healthy and got through the worst part of all the illnesses. But I know she was exposed and maybe now it’s just her time.
OR, could I be dealing with something acute? I’ve been syringe feeding her successfully with plenty of electrolytes vitamins, raw egg, calcium and probiotics. We also did a round of antibiotics initially. I did clean her breathing gland and put warm compresses on it as well as as some Betadine. No mites either.
Their food hasn’t changed, and the other four quail celedon hens I have left are doing phenomenal and back to laying.
Could she have been picking out only certain foods which made her vitamin deficient, or is she just another victim of the Mareks?
We plan to euthanize her Monday because she’s not eating and drinking on her own anymore, if she doesn’t pass away. She’s our favorite little gal we were shocked. Thanks for any input.
