So one of my quail who I have had for almost a year now has a bare back. I bought her and realized that she had a bare back being told it was from fights and mating. But ever since I have had her she has never been able to regrow her feathers. I’m not sure if there is anything I can do?

This is her…

It looks really bad and it’s looked like this since I have gotten her!

Any advice on what I should do?

Give her a bit of extra protein. It looks like she has new feathera coming in.

Have you seen any mites?
I have checked her multiple different times to be sure and haven’t seen any! I’ll try giving her more protein to see if that helps. The thing is, is that her back always looks like her feathers are growing back but it just stays like that!

You might try separating her from your other birds for a few days. Then you can see is she's pulling them or if someone is picking on her.

I’ve done that as well and can’t seem to pinpoint where the problem is. My male is moulting right now so he’s irritated so isn’t mating. There are no mites, I have no idea! But I will try giving her extra protein and see if that helps.

I just had this happen with 4 Jumbo Brown Coturnix out of a hatch of 18. These were shipped to me as hatching eggs from Southwest Gamebirds (JMF bloodline).

They had 28% protein New Country Organics organic, non-gmo Super Premium game bird feed since birth along with bottled reverse osmosis water with apple cider vinegar with the Mother. No mites.

14 chicks were fully feathered at 3-4 weeks, and 4 quail still bare on part of the back at 8 weeks—looked like the feathers were at the surface of the skin, but never feathered out for 4 of them. (I butchered them yesterday).

I have also hatched Myshire Farms shipped eggs and had no problems like this. Additionally, I have hatched eggs from my own flock of Myshire Farms Jumbo Brown Coturnix and not had problems like this.

I wonder if it is a genetic or inbreeding issue.

Hi did you have any luck with feathers growing back? One of my females is exactly the same - and the same circumstances! Thanks
Update for my quail:- the feathers are growing !! Several factors happened at the same time so I am not sure if it was a singular thing helped or a combination of factors but I increased the protein as suggested. At the same time we had a cold snap in the UK and she started moulting properly.
She almost has a proper tufty tail now!
Just waiting for her to get over her bad mood now caused by the molt !
