Will be getting 2 RIR hens. How much food do they consume in a day? Going to build a feeder... just don't want to over-do it. Thanks

I keep food and water in the coop 24/7. They free range most of the day so they are getting alot of their food with bugs and such. I really don't go thru that much food when they free range. I think its just best to have it available all the time. I have 2 RIR and 1 Catalina. I bought a 50lb bag back in Jan and still have some left. Congrats on getting your hens. They're alot of fun.

Two hens will eat less than a 12 oz coffee can scoop of pellets. If they have access to terrific grasses, bugs, seeds and such, even a touch less.
I'd give them a good scoop in the morning, and see if by late afternoon it is gone. If it is gone by 1 pm, I'd give them a touch more and see if that is gone by evening. That would be good to check. Feed out at night is an invitation to rodents.

I have 5 RIR, I have a 10 pound feeder, it lasts the 5 of them about 4 or 5 days and that is without going outside. If they are outside, it can last over 7 days.

Oh and that is with pellets. I get less days with crumbles, more waste.
