Is having sand in the run adequate for the availabilty of grit for chickens?

Be careful....there was someone on this forum that her chicken ate too much sand and had to have surgery for an inpacted crop. Vet pulled out lots and lots of sand out of the hen's crop. But there are people here also that have sand floors....

I'm curious too, since our ground is sandy. There's a little grass growing in the run area, but not much... it's mostly sand. Should I throw down shavings or hay in the run?
