Good morning everyone,
I have a question for you all, and am looking for honest answers.
Hubby and I will be building a new coop in a couple of weeks that will be just large enough to accommodate our existing flock of 8 birds (when the chicks are grown they will be 8 full size hens). Space limitations are such that we simply can not go any larger than this.....period! There is a chance that in the more distant future we could relocate the coop and run, but at this point in time that is impossible and we are trying to not even think about that possibility at this point in time.
SO here's my question. Do you all stick to the 4 sq feet per full size bird for coop space? Or have you had success with increasing your flock size (the maximum I would go is 12) without adding additional coop size. Our ladies have full time access to a good sized run, and free range for a couple of hours per day with supervision.
Would love to hear everyone's honest answers and opinions. I do know what is recommended, just want to know how hard and fast that rule is. (The coop tht we are building will be 36 square feet with 36 square feet of additional run space underneath and our existing run is almost 60 square feet (it is like 59 1/2)
