Question about chickens ageing

How long do chickens live because I have some that live longer that others

My buff orpington cross is 8 years old and she lays sometimes. can anyone tell me how many years she has left? She is also very active which is unual from my buff orpingtons becasue she is not fat unlike the others.

I had a brown leghorn that lived to 9 years and 10 months she was a great hen?

13 to 14 years but my oldest is 9.

Well I would be blessed if my chickens live that long. Your doing something right. I think you hit on something I try to prevent...them getting fat. Mine are spoiled pets and I have to be mindful of treats. I’ve read where they can live up to 15 years. I’ve had cats live well into their 20’s (oldest 25) that is because they had quality food and were kept totally indoors. So I guess the care you give your chickens will show in the longevity & health of their lives. Would just love to see a pic of your Orph!

They can live in to their teens in perfect conditions. They can be prone to health problems in their later years though.

While SOME can live to 15 or more in reality most do not.

There are those that are snagged by predators but I am not referring to them.

Breeds bred for high egg production generally don't live much past 3. They tend to succumb to reproductive issues.

Then there are illnesses that take many others.

Sadly as chickens are a prey animal they have become experts in hiding illnesses. By the time they show symptoms many are to far gone to help.

I have had them make it to 5+.

It seems that if they make it to 3 they can go a bit longer.
