Our chicken run is near our compost pile and the chickens have decided they love picking over it. Last time I went to see what they were so intent about, it was the bugs but they're still going over it & there are no bugs out today.

They are in a pen with about 300 square feet of grass, dandelion and clover, free access to feed and water and are regularly given fresh fruits and veggies.

Will they naturally stay away from the moldy veggies, or do I need to find away to keep them away from it? (Most of the food waste is buried, but not that deep & my kids somnetimes miss the pile so it is out until I clean it up.)

as long as there is no decaying rancid meat fresh or cooked in there it will not ttract flies which lay eggs then maggots

some times chickens get botulisn from decayed food stuffs
then you need to water them for three days with
1 cup of epsom salts put in 4 gallon of water

this cleans out the system by giving them a diarrhea and passing the spoiled food stuffs

then you need to give 2 tbsp of ACV per gallon of water

also some wet mash probiotics

email me for any questions

We only do veggies in the compost, no meat or dairy.

I was hoping they'd be smarter than to eat yucky stuff...they don't seem to care for the greens I throw to them once they are wilted. Just wanted to be sure.

A friend has chickens & I just realized every time I see them, they're hanging out on a pile of dirt she had delivered for the garden.

& we don't exactly have an insect problem. There's an ant hill over there. And other bugs, but no more than any other partially shaded part of our lawn!

Thank you! I really like where they're at and I'd prefer to not have to figure out a way to cage the compost!
