Hi all,

I have three, almost three week old muscovy ducklings. I need to know what I can feed them when I run out of the 5 lb bag of gamebird starter, or if I should order another bag. I cannot find it at any local stores (we don't have a tractor supply or anything near us). We do have a feed store, and I buy my scratch and Purina Layena for my grown ducks there, but they do not have game bird starter.

My dilemma is that I only have enough food left for maybe another week. I supplement them with stuff like veggies (frozen mixed but thawed), raw spinach, etc. but their primary diet is the gamebird starter, which is I think 24% protein. The scratch is only 8% protein and the Layena is 15% protein. I think ducklings need more than either of these, right? But, for how long? I don't want them to end up with Angel Wing from too much protein, but I want to make sure they have enough of what they need.

What else can I feed them?

Should I order another bag of game bird starter? It doesn't cost much for the 5lb bag but the shipping is horrible. I ended up paying almost $15 including shipping for that tiny 5 lb bag!!!

Can they eat the Purina Layena? Should I mix it with the scratch? That is what I do for my big ducks. I have a 50lb bag of each, and mix it on a 1 to 1 ration into a smaller plastic jug, then take it out to feed them. They also get lots of kitchen scraps, veggies, etc.

I know they can eat cat food, but I can't afford the really expensive cat food, as I have 17 cats (feral cat colony) and I feed them Purina indoor cat food. I know there is a good bit of corn in it, but it's the best I can do for now. So, if I am gonna feed that to the ducks, then I may as well feed them the scratch, right?

Ok, so I guess I need to know if I have to order some more game bird starter, so I can get it ordered and here in time before the other bag is gone, OR, if there is something else I can feed them once it is gone.

Thanks!!

Hi Chicken toes, thanks for the reply. How long will they stay on the chick starter? (Trying to figure out how much to buy! LOL) Do you know what the protein content is of that?

Thanks.

I think the protein content varies from brand to brand, I do believe they are all around 20%.

I keep my ducklings on starter until they're about 18 weeks old, then I switch to layer. You can switch to grower around 8 or 10 weeks, but my feed store doesn't carry grower. They do just fine on the starter.

after about 4 weeks old, i start adding in layer feed little by little to the starter until at about 8-12 weeks they can be fully on layer
