I ordered 6 chicks from Meyer. Rare assorted breeds. They say they give you a variety of breeds, but can anyone think of a reason why they would send me all black and white breeds? I received 2 Egyptian Fayoumi, what appears to be a spitzhauben, Exchequre Leghorn, silver laced polish, and a Silver Gray Dorking, but I am not worried about that one. She obviously is not pure black and white like the rest. Even if I am wrong, the alternative list of breeds I have are still black and white. Is there something I don't know about what an assorted selection is? Do chickens who are all the same color get along better? I have to say I am a little disappointed. They are all beautiful birds, but now I have 6 black and white chickens instead of a variety. Maybe I am looking at this wrong. Can someone give me some benefits of this? Or is Meyer just not that great of a hatchery?

From what I've heard Meyer is an amazing hatchery and I actually just ordered some from them on Friday set to arrive in October. But I think it's more the different breeds you're getting rather than color. I doubt it was intentional either, probably just happened to work out that way. I would also guess that there would maybe be more variety if there were more birds but I could be wrong. I don't think the birds along better or worse based on color haha though I'm sure a single different looking bird would stand out or maybe get picked on, I don't know. But I don't think the color thing was intentional, especially since it's more the different breeds, which I guess technically you did get. I don't know. I think most hatcheries would probably be similar, especially with smaller orders. I think they also just sort of go off of what's available. Like for instance, sell a certain number then use the rest for assortments, so it could be other breeds were sold out. I can understand being disappointed at them all being the same color but I don't think it was intentional and the orders I think change from order to order. I don't think it necessarily makes them a bad hatchery either, just using whats available. Hopefully this was at least a tiny bit helpful. :)

Very helpful Than you both. I've never ordered from a hatchery and my birds are happy and healthy, so I'm glad Meyer is a good place. I love my babies very much and that's what matters. They will grow to big big beautiful ladies. The probability of getting a variety of breeds all the same color just seemed strange. Thank you!

No problem. :) I've never ordered from a hatchery either, these will actually be our first chicks, but I'm addicted so have read a lot lol

But yeah, it does seem a little bit weird but perhaps because it was a smaller order they just sort of grabbed a few from one bin? Who knows. I'm sure you'll love them though. :) you could always ask too

that you got all black and white/silver birds is entirely random. it's bound to happen from time to time with all the birds they ship out, but no, it was not planned that way and there's no reason for it.
