Hi I just hatched out about 15 duck eggs, they are pure pekin from my own little flock. Some of them have the crest on the top of their heads... did something happen? I did not know they would have it and none of my adults have it and i could not find it on the internet. There is only two or three of them and one has a BIG crest looking thing and the others are smaller. I did not know if this was suppose to happen or not.... any ideas?

Thanks!! They are not going to be deformed though right?? haha They are growing nicely!! a couple of them just look a little different! Thanks for the help!

Crested ducks arent deformed, but can have severe health issues. The floof is actually coming from a cyst that develops on the head.It affects how the skull sutures together. The poof balls/ floofs vary in size and amount. Usually one. I have a crested Pekin that has 1 lrg poof on top and a tiny poof on the side. It’s due to a recessive gene. Many people WANT the crested duck for the spectacular “hair styles” some have! Some double floofs look like Princess Leah buns. Other giant ones look like a top hat. I lthink they look like lil George Washington’s. Or old timy wigs! The floof sometimes varies in color compared to the duck. Sadly the cyst obstructs the skull bones from closing appropriately. This means it’s not on top of the skull. It is attached to the brain. It can cause seizures, lack of balance, and can cause strokes. If an aggressive drake pulls on her poof while mating, it can cause bleeding & hemorrhage. This is the worst case scenarios, based on research I’ve done. This is my first crested duck & was purchased her at Tractor Supply w out noticing. I’ll be keeping a close eye on her. Just Google health issues associated with crested duck from a credible source. Good luck!
