We built a ladder type roost and thought it would be perfect

..but the chickens had another opinion !!
They are constantly battling for the top rung and are even going up in the rafters to roost. So we are going to cut the roost down to 3 bars and raise it, horizontial, to let all the girls and our one roo , all have the same level ,so they wont be fighting like a bunch of little children!!

Then I have to devise a way to make the rafters ''roost proof''. Any suggestions??

I thought that just having one very long high roost would solve this problem. It didn't, now they (21 of them) all fight over the same spot in the center of the roost. I wish I knew what to tell you. Good luck with the rafters.

I'm guessing this is a gambrel-roof storage shed type building? So there isn't a very extensive rafter area to chickenproof, just the top of the collar ties, right? I'd buy a cheap roll of the flexible thin-plastic 1-2" mesh, or use a 1" (not larger) cheap netting sold to keep birds off berry plants, and staple that up there.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat
