Someone I know asked me to take some silkie eggs that her hens were on because she was going out of town and was afraid they would hatch while she was gone. There were 11 and after candling them,i saw that they were at 3 diffeent incubation stages. I stuck them under a broody anyway and so far 1 has hatched. I noticed today that it only has 4 toes. I know she only has silkies(someone gave them to her but I haven't seen them), so how could that happen?Does that sometimes occur or is it possible that hers are mixed with something else. It doesn't matter to me, but I just wanted to know.

Is the broody still setting on the rest of the eggs though? How sweet, cute little babies! Did she have them under a hen or in a bator?

They are probably just low quality Silkies. I had a Silkie from a feed store that had 5 on one foot and 4 on the other.

The hen is still on the nest. I gave her chick to a hen that was hatching. I need to go over and look at this woman's chickens. She doesn't know much about them and I think she told me they were red silkies. I looked at this chick again and although it is a cute little thing, I can't imagine it being a silkie. It's body is light colored and it's face is red. It has 4 toes on each foot and no feathers on it's legs at all. That doesn't sound remotely like a silkie, does it? Like I said, it doesn't matter to me, but it makes me wondr what kind of chickens she has. They are tiny eggs and the chick is as cute as it can be.

Gina,

That definately doesn't sound like a silkie to me. Sounds like she had her breeds confused.
