Question about splay leg

How long until splay leg isn't really a worry? I took the non slip mats out of the brooder and they're on shavings, but of course chickens being chickens, they immediately started digging down to the cardboard. They're 5 days old. I can put the mats back in if I need to. Thanks!
 
I haven’t had any chicks or ducklings develop splayed leg after the first day.
