Hello---I have a group of 14 Australorps that are 10 days old. We had a few pasty vents last night, so I wiped them off. This morning, one chick kept picking at its vent. I think it drew attention to itself, and before long, there was loud peeping & a bloody chick.

I separated the bleeding chick & applied Blue-Kote. It is resting in its own little hospital box. The other chicks were moved out to a brooding room behind my garage. (They have all been in a large brooding box in my bedroom and were due to move tomorrow. I sped the move up to today in case the picking was partly due to needing more space.)

So...questions for those of you who know more than I do.

1. Should I keep the hospital box in my bedroom for the next few days to keep an eye on the injured chick? Or would it feel better if I moved it out to the brooding room so it could hear the other chicks peeping? I'm assuming I should keep it separated until any blood is gone and feathers start to grow back?

2. Regarding the Blue-Kote: was that a foolish thing to use? It seems like some people recommend it and others don't. I am raising this flock on organic feed for organic eggs. I read on the bottle about not using it on horses that will be used for feed. Will eggs be safe from this chick if it turns out to be a hen?

Thanks in advance for any advice you may be able to give!

Blu kote is fine and you could even try and put her back in now that you have applied it and watch to see if the other peck at her. That is suppose to help it so they wont so she may be able to go right back in.

Maybe she was crammped and now with a bigger brooder she will be better

Good luck and

Thanks so much for the advice!
I waited to put her back in until I had some uninterrupted time to sit and watch how they interacted. I also put some chopped sunflower seeds in at the same time, so they were busy eating their treat when I slipped her in. All was well for about 20 minutes, and then a few took little nips at her bum. I grabbed her so she wouldn't start bleeding again. So I guess I'll let her heal a little more and try again.
Thanks again for your help & encouragement.
