Hello---I have a group of 14 Australorps that are 10 days old. We had a few pasty vents last night, so I wiped them off. This morning, one chick kept picking at its vent. I think it drew attention to itself, and before long, there was loud peeping & a bloody chick.
I separated the bleeding chick & applied Blue-Kote. It is resting in its own little hospital box. The other chicks were moved out to a brooding room behind my garage. (They have all been in a large brooding box in my bedroom and were due to move tomorrow. I sped the move up to today in case the picking was partly due to needing more space.)
So...questions for those of you who know more than I do.
1. Should I keep the hospital box in my bedroom for the next few days to keep an eye on the injured chick? Or would it feel better if I moved it out to the brooding room so it could hear the other chicks peeping? I'm assuming I should keep it separated until any blood is gone and feathers start to grow back?
2. Regarding the Blue-Kote: was that a foolish thing to use? It seems like some people recommend it and others don't. I am raising this flock on organic feed for organic eggs. I read on the bottle about not using it on horses that will be used for feed. Will eggs be safe from this chick if it turns out to be a hen?
Thanks in advance for any advice you may be able to give!
