Question: Are crows friends or foes to chickens?

I have been wondering if crows help keep predators away. With my old flock, I had considered them foes, bullies, and would encourage the hens to run from them. But since then, I have heard they could be a deterrent against hawks?

Does anyone have the low down? Thanks.

I have always heard that they deter hawks. I had up a plastic crow deal and I got some hawks to move right out. My chickens are still terrified of them, although my roosters are terrified of butterflies too, and the girls just catch them. I have never had a crow hurt my flock, and we live right next to a corn field so there's a lot of them around here. If your chickens are afraid of them, that's probably good, because it will be good practice for hawks.

I think the best hawk deterrents are turkey buzzards. We have about 6 on our property and they chase the hawks around.
