Mini rant incoming. You have been warned.

For the younger crowd, punctuality is critical. Fashionably late may be OK for parties or hanging out with friends, but that bus or plane or train won't wait for YOU. People set schedules and meeting times for a reason, and for you to abuse it is disrespectful and may result in you being left out, passed over, etc. Don't be that person.

Here's a perfect example. If you're job hunting, be early. Always. Hiring managers spend 3-5 seconds looking over a resume and build a call list from that based on what catches their eye. Doesn't matter if we're talking fry cooks or software engineers, works the same way. Once you have an interview, show up a little early, even if it means waiting in a lobby for them to be free to speak with you. It leaves a HECK of a good impression vs someone who walks in the door right at the appointed time, or heaven forbid, late. Time is money, and if you're late, you're wasting their money. Even with a good resume, you'll end up back of the pile vs someone who may or may not be as qualified but showed up and was ready to go.

School trips are another important one. Your teachers have a very tight schedule to try and cram as much into a trip as they can because they on a schedule and budget. If they have to wait around for you to be 5 minutes late, that's 5 minutes less at the next stop or meal break, and all your fellow students are going to remember who caused that delay and annoyed the faculty. Again, don't be that person.

If you plan on being 5 minutes early to everything, you will be right on time every time.

End rant.
