I can tell you why. Nosey Moms take locked and hidden diaries as a challenge. She's nosey in the first place, now you're purposefully hiding things from her? What is it? Why would you need to hide things from Mom? Are you experimenting with drugs? Is someone bullying you? It could be a million terrible things. She MUST find out to make sure you're safe.

Just don't keep a diary, or don't put anything in it you wouldn't want Mom to know.

Better Idea. Decoy diary. She's GOING to find it if you hide it. So leave her one to find.
ooooh yes a decoy😏

What's the difference between a diary and a journal?

I looked this up, and it seems to be regional whether there's a difference, and if so, what makes them different. In my neck of the woods the terms were pretty interchangeable, though you'd never catch a boy with a diary. If they did keep such a thing, they were always journals, not diaries . . . much like how boys would never play with dolls, only action figures.

Yeah, I don't think you can call G.I. Joe a doll. I mean, certainly not with a Kong Fu grip.
Or Evel Knievel
