Question of the Day - Thursday, September 5th, 2024

It was the summer between kindergarten and first grade that I crashed my bike. Luckily when I hit the concrete, my head cushioned the fall. No one wore helmets back then. I remember waking up on my neighbor's white couch. She was on the phone and had her hand or something on my head. Then I blacked out and the next thing I remember is being in the tub at my house being bathed by my parents in what I thought was blood, which wasn't far from the truth. I didn't realize at the time that it was just my blood mixing with the water. I blacked out again and woke up on my parents' bed, and I remember trying to get up and go outside and my parents finding me and dragging me back to the bed, and when I finally did escape my parents' notice and made it outdoors a neighbor boy saw me and hit me in the head with a pine cone. For being concussed, it's one of my strongest memories from that time period.

So yeah, whatever age comes between kindergarten and first grade, I learned to ride a bike sometime before that.
Yeesh. It's a wonder any of us survived childhood.

The worst wreck I ever had was on a trike. This was before my bicycle days. I watched my two older sisters and their friends cruising around the trailer park on their bikes and noticed they didn't have to pedal constantly, as I did. They could "coast" where their feet were not moving but their bikes kept going. I couldn't figure out how to do that on my tricycle. I finally decided if I just pedalled fast enough, it would work.

I'm very determined.

Eventually I got that trike going at a blazing speed. Then, just like my sisters, I stopped pedalling.

The trike did a somersault. The gravel road went flying past my eyes.

I woke up on the couch with a cool washcloth on my forehead. Dad was washing dishes in the sink and the curtains were drawn so it was dark in the room. It was very peaceful. I don't think anybody ever figured out how that little red trike managed to buck me off so hard.

I certainly wasn't telling.
