Someone wants to me build them a coop. I have only built a large coop not a small one. They want it around 4 by 4 and a ft or so off the ground. I have a few question.
1. How tall should it be off the ground? I was thinking 2 ft to allow the chicken space under the coop.
2. I was thinking a simple 4 by 4 frame about 3 ft tall in the front and maybe 2 1/2 in the back. For a slanted roof. Will this be tall enough for a roost on a pole?
3. Adding a window to one of the wall. Does it matter which window?
4. He wants an external nesting box. Easiest way to build one? A door that opens on the top or on the back side? How does it support itself?
That all the question that I can think of for now.

5 gal buckets make great nesting boxes, You can see one example in this pic.

You can get the bucket and front piece or the front piece only from Fowl Stuff.com or many of the online poultry supply stores. I bought one front piece and after seeing how simple it is I decided to build all the rest of mine myself from regular 3/4" pvc. You can even take the piece you cut out of the lid and cut an opening in the bottom of the bucket then use the cut out piece as a door and gather your eggs from outside the coop.
