Ok so on Wed. 2/18/09 it was day 21 of incubation & I had 2 of 18 eggs pip. I am *still waiting for them to zip...... I've had 3 chicks pip & zip & since then I'd had another 4 eggs pip. The ones that have pipped since then have all looked like they[re about ready to zip in every sense of the word out of their shell but they've been that way for a really long time like since midnite last night. the ones that have already zipped out took me aback a bit because I didn't think they had nearly as much of a lead on getting out of thier shell as the ones I'm still waiting on now. Or it seems like they had this tiny hole as compared to the others that had a good cracked open line etc.
My question is when do I step in & try to help the ones struggling? I can still see movement &/or the rise & fall of their fuzz that's sticking out of their shell as they breath & a couple of them I can see their little beaks & they're still cheep cheep cheepin, but I'm starting to worry that I'm going to loose them in their shell. And then of course I am a novice so what does "helping them" exactly mean should I be helping them to get the rest of the shell off or just to pop their little heads out etc.? The chicks that are zipped & out already, have been helping the stuck ones along certainly & a pictures is worth a thousand words & so here is one for you all. this was taken at about 3:30 am this morning & is about the same now. The one in the far corner has the same crack as the one looking straight at the camera but it's facing the wall of the incubaor & so is not seen in the pic but that's the one that was the first to pip.
Tomorrow at 3:00 pm is 72 hours since the first chick has zipped & I'll need to take him out for food & water by then right? I'm starting to feel bad because I know they must be hungry etc. So what do you all think? I hadn't planned on anything until morning & actually I'd thought to try for some sleep tonight but I thought maybe I should post this here tonight to see what some of the experts think. Is this normal & should I be staying calm or is this time to panic or just roll up sleeves & help or what? the temp in the incubator is at 100 degrees & the humidity is at 71%
