We had to replace a swamp cooler motor this year. It basically burnt itself out. It almost caused a fire also; the whole kitchen filled with smoke. Scary...

Anyway, we put the new motor in. And it got hot after a few hours. Then won't turn on again.

My question is; do they build these so that they will auto shut off if they get hot? Or is this broken? Its literally brand new and just bought today. And when I went in the room it had turned itself off, and wouldn't turn on again (was on ~ 2.5 hrs). I then felt it and its really hot.

Could use input on this? Thanks.

I don't know your specific motor but generally there's a red or black button on the end opposite of the pulley that's basically a breaker that will trip if the motor draws to many amps in the event of a problem. It sounds like you have something else going on to burn up one and trip or possibly burn up a new one. Something is wrong and you have a fire hazard with the new one if it's getting that hot.

Could a belt being too tight cause this? When we tried to find parts for it; the belt and pulleys didn't quite match up with the design. We did the best we could but it seems like the older cooler needed either a smaller pulley or something; which the stores only had certain sizes. (Or smaller belt; we got the biggest belt they had but it feels tight.)
