Our first egg hatched! There are 7 more to go. The first one running around chirping and hitting all the eggs. I know I should not open the incubator, but I thought the chick would hatch and rest, not run around like a crazy chick :-)
******the poor chick looks like it wants to sleep but everytime it's head drops it jerks it up and starts running around pecking the ceiling or sides. ******

#2. Also what does everyone use to disinfect the things we just for our previous chickens?

#3. We put some of the eggs we ordered out under our broody silkie and they should be hatching as well. I would like to put these chicks out under her as well, what is the best way to sneak them under her? She is a pretty mellow chicken. I remember reading that you should put the chicks under by a day old or they might not bond with the hen.

Thank you for the help

I take my chicks out as they hatch. (Usually w/in 1/2 hour once they start running around in there.) I keep my hatch humidity at 75% so that when I meddle (yes, I am a big meddler) I don't drive my humidity down to an "unsafe" level. With that being said, the "experts" will tell you that them running around in there knocking the other eggs around won't hurt them. They also say a chick can go 3 days in the bator w/o food and water and I am highly against that too. So if you are comfortable, and it looks like your humidity is up there considering the condenstation on your incubator and you want to take him out- that is your decision. My last hatch was 100% from lockdown, I opened it a hundred times. (I'm not exaggerating, I open a lot during hatch.) The key is to keep the humidity up when you do.

As for cleaning, I use bleach water.

The last one, I can't answer because I have no experience there. :-)

Thank you :-) I might take the chick out. I updated my original part about it just not laying down and resting :/ . I tried to get the humidity high, my husband opened the incubator this morning after some pipped overnight. He didn't know about keeping the humidity high.

Have you had brand new baby chicks before?? If not, wait until you see them face planted on the floor, back leg sticking out like they are dead. It'll give you a heart attack. lol They sleep in some of the weirdest positions and they can be running around then stop and fall asleep or like you said, act like they are going to then bam they are up and running lol

We bought some from a farm store up here but they were at least a few days old. #2 just hatched a little bit ago

The first one seems happy to have someone to cuddle up to. The second one has been doing the stand up/face plant. He/she seems a little weaker then the first one, that first one, I think, is going to be spunky

. I did sneak in quick and grab out the old shells.
