Okay... a friend of mine has peacocks... beautiful birds... he gave me 3 eggs to hatch, with the intent to raise them a while and tame them down for him. They would then go back to my friends as we live in a suburban area and CAN'T KEEP PEACOCKS.

Only one egg hatched... so we put a Serama chick in with him so he wasn't lonely. Now they are best friends and the funniest looking pair ever... but... the Peacock also loves my husband. He calls to my hubby every time he sees him. My husband has spent the last 3 months sitting with the little guy, watching TV with him, taking him for walks, etc. The peacock flies from where ever he is at the moment and lands on hubby's should and greets him with a head rub on his cheek. This is a very tame and friendly Peacock.

PROBLEM...

We took the Peacock to my friend's on Saturday. This sweet baby has stopped eating, stopped drinking and calls non-stop for my husband. My friend is an hour and a half away, but we are meeting in the middle so we can get the Peacock back to see if we can get him eating again.

My question... WHAT HAVE WE DONE... and CAN IT BE UNDONE

? I so don't want this sweet bird to suffer because of what we did. He was living inside with us... in a very large bird cage with my Serama... he is getting big and won't fit much longer which is why we took him up to the farm. Now that we are getting him back... we were thinking of letting him go outside in the chicken run during the day. He is always around my (bantam) girls when they are outside, they get along fine. The run is 6' 5" tall, 8' wide and 22' long so there is plenty of room right now. We would just need to add a high perch for him. The bottom line is... I can't keep him... no way, no how, can't happen.

What should we do going forward? Can we break this bond he has with our family? Will he be more interested in females as he matures and forget about us? When do they really start to get big and loud?

(I won't be offering to hatch any more peacocks... that's for sure. And I definitely won't be offering to hatch any Emus...

Thanks for any advice...

(Oh, and his name is Sir Flyalot... which was a joke cause he liked flying around from shoulder to shoulder in the evenings to watch TV.)

I am sad to hear s/he has stopped eating and drinking. Hopefully she will very soon. I keep my peafowl away from my chickens, and really any other birds. As peafowl are pron to getting eye infections, and it's caused by chicken poop. I had 6 peachicks last year, lost some to bobcats and the rest all got a sickness. I had one adult white peacock, Romeo, and he got the eye infections and died after about a month of so after that. We were doctoring him twice a day, he just didn't make it. I do not think it's a good idea to keep her with your chickens. Just my $.02

Do you know anyone in the area that could keep an inside/backyard pea? I'm sure there would be alot of people wanting a beautiful, and friendly bird in their home or backyard. I know I would. Good luck m'dear.
