Question re: perch for chicks

Do I need to provide the chicks with a perch in their brooder?

I have read that a 2" perch is appropriate for grown chickens, can chicks hold onto this same size perch or do I need a smaller one?

I put a small one made of 2x2s in for my chicks to play on when they were in the brooder. They didn't really roost on it to sleep. At 9 weeks, they now have a nice log roost in their coop and they all still snuggle up on the ground to sleep!
