Hello all, this is a bit of a doozy to me as this duck fell into my lap suddenly. I was out walking my dog when I came across her (I think its a female) she doesn't show any signs of distress. She has been very friendly, somewhat fearful of me but makes a fuss when i leave. She was cold, wet and hungry so I brought her back to my home until I can find who she belongs to. If I can't find an owner I intend to integrate her into my flock. As I gave her a bath I noticed this fleshy bit under her crest, I believe its an injury as its the only place where her feathers are uneven.

What can be done? She doesn't show any immediate problems, her breathing is somewhat raspy but has become much better once she got the chance to clean her nares. She bobs her head a lot but not in a way that is unnatural. I haven't got the chance to see her move around but intend to let her walk the backyard a bit tomorrow. Is this serious? Should I keep her out of water from now on? Will she ever be able to safely integrate into my flock? The other birds are all khaki cambell females but the sometimes pull each others heads when in the pool together. I appreciate any advice.

First thanks for replying.

She is very reluctant to let me do so and I am a bit scared to do so as well. I will post better pictures in the morning when I can have someone else hold her
If there is a wound though that will need to be treated. So hopefully you can check to make sure it isn't an injury.

Okay I am much more optimistic about her situation, but also very confused.

I was hesitant at first because I know crested ducks have open skulls and I wasn't sure if this might have been part of her brain hanging out. Now that I've been able to look at it closer that doesn't seem to be the case. But still...any ideas? Ingrown feathers? I have the supplies to disinfect and bandage whatever this is, but it doesn't seem to be a cut or infection, more like a lump of flesh.

She is adorable ❤️ Maybe a drake got hold of her? They will grab hold of anything to hold on. Clean it up real good and try some triple antibiotic or spry Veterycin on it. If it's not an open wound it may just be the way it is under those puffs of feathers. I'd make sure to give her some Nutritional yeast over her feed its so good for them and crested can use the extra vitamins. I'd def keep her away from any drakes you have. But females will mount and grab hold too.
