We have a bunch of trees in our yard some huge and others small, I had a question regarding my chickens.. They seem to be interested in the trees more then being on the ground eating food. I have bantams so there great flyers and they spend almost all there time in the trees flying from one free to another and come down once in a while to eat food then they fly back up there and do the same thing over and over again. Its pretty fun to watch the flying abilities they have but it just seems a bit weird that there in the trees almost all the time. Any advice as why there in the trees all the time?

Is there something on the ground that is keeping them nervous??....barking dogs, too many kids around, lawn mowers, tractors, chain saws, cars, horns, sirens, etc....Things that keep them on edge will cause them to stay up in the trees. :-)

we just have dogs but 1 dog is in a corral far away from the chickens because he always try to kill them the other dogs are use to the chickens and hardly bother them and there usually at our porch sleeping

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X2 Chickens do seem to feel safer in trees, especially if there is a lot of ground cover and they can't see a far distance.

Are your chickens a jungle variety ? They are great flyers and more comfortable in trees. The only way you can keep them out is to have a large, covered run. They may love trees but, hawks and other predators can pick them off easily.
