Hello! all. I have a question to ask and it probably has been asked before, if so please forgive me. We will be getting some Hy-Line Browns (about four) in about a month or so my question is how big should the coop be to house the four chickens?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Most people here would say about 4 sq ft per chicken indoors plus 6-10 sq ft per chicken in the run. For four chickens, if you are sure you will never want to get more, that would mean a coop that is like 4x4 and a run that is 4x8 or larger.

Personally I don't think they look as happy that way as with more space -- mine have like 8-15 sq ft per chicken indoors and a large run. It depends somewhat on your climate, too -- if there will be lengthy stretches when they just won't wanna go out, because of Serious Winter or because of prolonged hard rain in a roofless run, then the larger indoor space is more relevant than if you live in, like, Hawaii

Unless you are legally restricted to only 4 chickens max, it would be worth building your coop extra large "in case" you "should someday" decide you "might possibly" want more <vbg> (Practically everyone here seems to have that happen eventually <g>)

Good luck, enjoy your chickens,

Pat

Thank you so much Pat for the information. For right now just the four maybe in year we might get more. No legally restrictions on the number of chickens. I think we will go with the 8-15 sq ft per chicken.
