In my Rabbit Barn
Hello, we have 3 gorgeous Cayugas, 2 hens and 1 drake. They are simply beautiful and really sweet (thought a little shy). We read about them and found out that they are a threantend breed, and not many people breed them anymore, I was curious as to why it is that nobody breeds them much anymore, they are an extremly broody breed, and love raising ducklings, even in the winter! If anybody knows why so few people breed them, it'd be cool, I was just curious.

Thanks,

I think they are stunning as well. I did consider getting these or Black East Indians before I settled on getting runners. I just love the way their feathers sheen.

Perhaps the clue is in your question as to their popularity? You say they are good brooders! Lots of people want regular eggs laid by uncaring mothers!

Duckluv: They are really gorgeous ducks and really sweet

ejctm: That's a good point, Cayuga's really don't lay a lot of eggs, and are big meat ducks...

not sure, on here loads of people have them. Personally, I have them running out my ears, black, blue and splash colors of them.
Love them myself. Very productive, good sellers, beautiful colors, all you want in a domestic duck. Much prettier than a nasty ol muscovy to me, LOL

Muscovy ducks creep me out, if only because of the skin around their eyes...other wise I like them, thought I don't have any myself...I'm bugging my mom to let me show my cayuga drake Domis in the fair at some point...he'd be a winner for sure

Yep, That's how I feel about them, just makes them nasty looking to me.

Kansaskid, yep, I was really expecting to come home from work with a dozen death threats today as much as people on here seem to love them LOL

I just cant figure them out, there are some many nice domestics to me that are just drop dead beautiful, but to each his own right

I'm in agreement with you, Triple B. *shudder*

LOVE my Cayuga pair! I'm waiting to see if Thelma decides to go broody. If not, maybe next Spring I'll put one of my incubators to work on a couple of her eggs and just lie to my land-lady, saying "they just hatched - she must have hidden her nest!"

Oh, wait..... that's the same excuse I'll use if she DOES go broody!

And I specifically LOOKED for Cayuga ducklings when I bought these two.... because they are on the "endangered" list and my goodness, they are so lovely! As ducklings their little black bills and legs were SO freakin' adorable.

Here they are swimming in an upside down cake pan cover!

And later, in their first trough "pool."

Then in the kiddie pool....

And then one of them trying to decide if it was safe to jump down from the edge of the 300 gallon stock tank I got for them.
