Questions about feeding

We have 9 chicks that are nine and a half weeks old. I was at our local feed store today to ask questions and I just want second opinions. I was told that they need to be on the starter feed until the first egg is produced. Not sure I agree with this. Any advice? I was also told that they will always need grit. I was told before that once they went outside grit was not needed. Any input is helpful!!

That's the way I've always done it, switching to layer when I find an egg. I've never given chicks grit, however and they've all grown up nice and healthy!
