Questions about painting the inside

Okay, so my family is getting chickens this year. We're still in the planning stages of the coop and recently I read about the benifits on painting the inside of the coop. Of course my dad wants me to do the research on it, and I don't know anything about paint

. I know I need outdoor paint, but what kind should I use? Should I paint the roosts, or would that make them to slick? What about the floor? I'm concerned that if we paint the floor I won't be able to clean it properly due to paint chipping off (by scraping off sticked poo). Should we also paint the ceiling, or would mites not go that high?

I painted the floor, walls & ceiling in my coop. I have had no problems with peeling at all.

Didn't paint the roosts but I don't see why you couldn't.

I actually think the paint makes it easier to clean up because less gunk gets sucked into the wood fibers.

Mites will still get in painted or not. Just treat them if they arrive & you should be OK.

A little 7 dust takes care of the feathers & vaseline on the legs & feet bout twice per week for a couple of weeks will fix the rest.

But I would say yes to paint - Get exterior house paint & USE PRIMER!

I used exterior semi-gloss. Flat would be too hard to scrub & hi-gloss was a little too "shiny" for what I wanted, so semi-gloss worked out great!

Prime it first no matter what.

Paint it with a semi gloss exterior paint inside and out. High gloss will work fine, but when you go to repaint some years down the road, it will be extra work to get the new coat to stick good.

I prefer a latex water based paints with low VOCs, but I paint a lot, so it is important to me for my health.
Other folks might recommend you use oil based with the wood.

I paint murals as a side job. My daughter painted her first couple of murals in our coop when I built it.

Over the years, I have had the best durability with the more expensive lines of paint made by Behr carried at Home Depot, but I have had good results with a few other brands as well. I have good results using Benjamin Moore, Dunn Edwards, Sears, and Glidden. I absolutely hate Frazee and Dutch Boy. I paint a lot of kids rooms and outside spaces, and Behr Premium seems to hold up to scrubbing and cleaning the best. Currently my favorite for exteriors is Behr Premium Plus. However, any premium paint will do a good job and hold up well over a long time, even with lots of cleaning. If you scrimp on the quality and try to save money on the paint, you may have issues with the paint eventually rubbing off with repeated cleanings.

I put scrap vinyl on the floor, under the nest boxes, and under my roost.

I don't recommend you paint the inside white. It will show every little stain the chickens make. Pick a bit darker color so the mess they make won't stand out.

I also buy "oops" paints all the time. They are the best deals! The premium paints are as high a $30 - $40 a gallon normally, but I have found some of the same brands for as low as $5 at the home improvement stores on the oops cart, and $1 at Habitat for Humanity when they get a big shipment from a retailer in. I just make sure the paints still fit my brand and quality requirements, too.

Yep, I scored 'cause it was Behr premium at HD and only $5--I paid full price for the paint we used on the outside of the coop because it was important for it to match the other outbuildings, but for the nest boxes and inside of the coop I was all about the deal.

Wow lots of great info GardeNerd! One question though: Would it be bad if instead of vinyl we just painted the floor? I really don't want vinyl if I can avoid it.
