Questions about planting sunflower seeds

I'm in zone 5, when is the best time to plant them?
Last year they didn't do anything because it was sooooo hot and there was very little water, so this year I'd like to get them in the ground ASAP.

Middle of May. You can start the seeds indoors for 2 weeks before planting.​

Really? They are so easy to grow! My daughter is actually growing some right now as a recycle project for school. Here they are a week ago. They are 3 inches tall now!

Wow mine grow great outside from seed, but no matter what I try to start inside it always dies.

Strange...usually indoor sow works terrific. Have you tried picking up a greenhouse kit or seed starting system? Those never fail for me.
