Start AND keep looking. You can learn a LOT from just working with production stock. Like what pests you have about, what predators, where the holes are in your fences. And a host of learner stuff it's cheaper to make mistakes on hatchery birds.
Even if you end up culling what you start with, you'll be more certain when things go right and look right, and go wrong and look wrong.
Making a mistake that kills six production chickens hurts a LOT less than one that devastates your starter show flock.
Sure it means culling heavily but you do get your set up figured out while you track down GOOD suppliers.
And heck when a mistake means you made dinner... it's not such an awful thing to face.
