I live in florida. Last month we purchased 6 quail chicks (approx 2 weeks of age). Somehow we got lucky and have 1 roo, Jordan, and 5 hens. (I have 5 children, all boys. So this shocked me
).
Our enclosure is 6 ft wide by 10 ft by 7 ft in height. It had a small cage inside 2 x 6 x 1 that house the current mature quail. While cleaning the cage and attempting to make friends, a hen (queen of hearts) decide to venture out and explore. Laying our first egg! Now when we allow them to explore during the day and put them up at night. We are very enchanted watching them explore. We added 2 buckets with some sand for playing and hiding. They have a sandbox in their cage. We also make sure to put their and water down as well.
My 9 year old had expressed an interest in giving them plants to eat or hide under. What plants are safe? Ones that will not grow 8 feet tall. Can Pine needles be added to the floor? I have researched a bit but there IS so much information.
Our roo, Jordan, is not shy about mating either. I've had to explain that he is not "pulling their hair"
several times. He seems very hmmm......vigorous? As we have a 1:5 ratio. Do we need more hens for him? Or is this a case of just coming into sexual maturity and he will not be like this forever?
Allowing the group to come out the last few days seems to mellow his behavior. Which I believe the ladies enjoy
.
I am leaving a few pics of our enchanting feather fam. Last pic is one our hens. She is very inquisitive and tilts her head when you speak to her.
Please feel free to share your fam too!
