Questions Questions about turkeys

I am sure that all my questions have been answered befor ,But I am new and missed them so here goes. How old are turkeys when they start laying eggs? and do they lay an egg a day like chickens? do I need to fix her a nest on the ground or will she lay in my chicken nest boxes? I have a male and a female but he does not seem to care about her at all , why ? and will they mate ?

Turkeys start to lay the Spring after they are hatched. They will mate. They will lay 1 egg every other day from (I think) March to Sept. If you take the eggs they will lay throught the whole season of March through Sept. If you leave the eggs the Hen will go broody and hatch the eggs. She will fix a nest but you can get her an area so she will get used to it.

The hens will often go off somewhere to nest. I have to watch my hens and follow them to get the eggs and move her to the barn. I have to keep her penned up for a few days to break her from wanting to set.
The predators would make a meal out of her for sure if left to fend for herself. I have also put eggs back under her and let her hatch them out. I got an egg a day from my hens until middle of Nov. here in Indiana...
As far as mating I think a hen can mate and retain fertility for 2 or 3 weeks from that one mating....
So if you do not see them mate it doesn't mean eggs are not fertile..

My turkey hen must have jumped over fence to visit the Tom because she hatched out 12 of 14 eggs!
