Since my hatches were such flops (thanks, lg), we're going to pick up some Rhode Island Reds when dh is done mowing. They have 1 week and 6 week olds. Is there any way to sex them that young?

i heard that if you turn it on its back and it stays on its back it is a roster but if it roles over it is a hen but i do not know that to be a fact so dont hold me up to it

At 6 weeks old the cockerels will have a bigger red comb and waddles than the hens. Harder to tell on the week olds tho

Combs: Larger and redder.

stance: more upright, "Cocky"

and feet; thick and large... although some Rhodie hens are that way...

Can't tell at a week.

I'm a first-time chicken owner with seven-week-old RIRs, and it was pretty obvious weeks ago who the roos are. Their combs and wattles start growing and reddening up much sooner than the pullets' do.

That said, anyone need two RIR roos? LOL

Wait.

There may be some comb development or a slight difference in size at 6 weeks that the trained eye might detect. But, I've had "sure bet" females turn out to be cocks.
The 'sure bet' is the test of time. Get 'em and you'll know soon enough.

Well, I got 'em. The guy didn't know any more about sexing them than I did, so we'll have to wait and see.

They looked like hens while I was picking them out, but now that they're home I'm second-guessing myself. Only 1 looks roo-ish to me, but I couldn't resist the color--it's almost a mohagany. Gorgeous!

I'll probably post picks in the "What sex am I?" department just to be sure.
