Hi All,

We live in a rural neighborhood and want to get a couple ducks. We are trying to learn a little about them for now. We used to have chickens in a different location, but they were NOISY when they were laying and I was fearful everyday that someone would complain about them. I am wondering if there is a list of duck breeds and their behaviors somewhere? but maybe some people with duck experience can lend some thoughts.

Muscovy ducks are very quiet. The females make a "cooing" sound and as noted, the males hiss. Some people don't find them attractive, however. My male Pekins are fairly quiet, but the female is very loud.

Muscovy are the most quiet, that said the females make a range of sounds.. quack, trill, coo, hiss though often only use the quieter voices.. drakes only hiss after maturity.

They do fly though and as said some dislike the facial fleshing. I think you get used to it.

All drakes are quiet compared to females.. my pekin females are anything but quiet, chatty little monsters super personable but not quiet, the drake is but most want females.

Just my two cents. My muscovies were much louder than the runners I have now. Plus they were very messy compared to the runners. When allowed to range in a 3/4acre garden muscovies are great but confined to a 35x45ft run I wasn't happy (neither were they) .

Muscovies are also very adept at getting where you don't want them. Found one in the vegetable garden tonight. She apparently went under the fence. So it's out tommorrow to barricade her out. Luckily, she did not eat the veggies that are coming up.
They are messy, though I think my Pekins are probably just as bad. The muscovies are very close to the wild version and always look "unkept". They are very easy to train, however. Mine have 4 1/2 acres and the previous owner had a couple of acres. That probably helps. (He did not clip the wings on his ducks—they would fly off for a while and then come back.)

We have two anconas and one Muscovy. The anconas were recommended to us (we live in town) as good foragers and layers and there not suppose to be to loud. I researched how loud they all were and vetoed the ones that said very loud!
