"Quiet" Rooster Breeds

Just came across this thread. I have 8 hens and am ordering 10 more chicks this spring. I want a rooster to help protect my girls when they are free ranging maybe eventually breed. I live outside of town but i have neighbors. I live across the street from a cow farm btw. Ive had some neighbors ask why i dont have a rooster yet but i have one or two neighbors im afraid would be upset if he were to crow at 4am. I dont know what decision to make. I know i want a roo badly. Any suggestions? SHould i start sharing eggs before i get one

Step #1 is to be sure they're legal. If you want to keep peace with the neighbors you think might be fussy about it, just go visit with them about it first. If you keep them cooped up (the roosters - not the neighbors) until later in the morning, the crowing may not be such a problem. Offering them fresh eggs now and then may not hurt, either!

@bobbi-jThanks! So if I keep my guy in the coop until morning he may not crow in the coop? I've tried to look for the laws in my County and have had no luck. I'm in Cecil County maryland. Would it be a county law or a town law? I live outside of rising sun. Thanks!

He'll probably still crow, but if he's inside it won't be quite so loud as when he's outside. Go visit with the neighbors. Are you on good terms now? If so, that would help.

I really don't know them. I've Introduced ourselves but they keep to themselves. Where the coop is now it is on their side of the house. We are building a larger coop in our property opposite of their house I'm hoping that would cut down the sound. We had tried a little Bantam rooster but the sound was right under their kids window so that didn't last but two days. They didn't say anything but I knew it was too much. After the Bantam found a new home I saw the neighbor and told her I was worried it was too loud right next to their house and she shook her head yes. I'm hoping building a coupe on the other side of a property it wouldn't be so bad they will hear him but not as if it was right next to their house. Excuse the typos my phone won't let me spell correct

Quiet Roosters?

I had two first was a Crème legbar and 3 hens, then the cochin started crowing.... The two eventually fought a nasty fight and I had to trade the legbar away.

I kept the cochin, and he had a deep mellow quiet crow for about three(3) months then BaM LOUD Crowing he was only quiet between 6pm & 9pm then he would crow every hour or so at night.

Then during the day he would crow twenty times, then an hour later another twenty this went on all day and he had 9 hens to get busy with.... Please note (this isn't an Ideal situation if your in an Urban setting) If you really want to have Code Enforcement knocking on your door get a rooster....

You don't need a Cockerel for eggs, you need a Cockerel for chicks, and even then its hit or miss.

Would I get another rooster? if it was a non crowing Cock yes I would... But other wise one of my females will step up and be the Alpha Female & I'm good with that too...

I think it's a shame that we have to feel like we are pressured to give people eggs (bribe/tax) to our neighbors if we want to have hens. I am trying to feed my family here with our eggs. It's not my responsibility to share my food with the neighbors. I don't ever recall a time when they have ever shared their groceries with me. The real problem is that when you give them a few gifts here & there of your eggs, they start to expect it. If you stop giving them eggs (as I have, because I started selling them) then they start to act different toward you. If they want eggs, why don't they get some chickens of their own. Well, at least that is how it is with my neighbors. They expect me to hand over my garden bounty & eggs just like that simply because we share the same neighborhood. it's ridiculous, I think. Just whatever you do, don't allow them to get to cozy & start expecting things from you, let them know that these are "gifts."

Yeah, the dog two houses over is alwyas barking excessively, it's outside alot. I don't care. But I try to keep my chickens on the down low. My neighbors to the right, like my chickens. The ones to the left are a young married couple, I don't think they're home during day? They haven't complained though. I had a coon get one of my hens, I kinda want a Roo, but don't wanna push my luck. Especially seeing that they grow that late/early . Maybe I'll just get a pig, but maybe that'd be too smelly f or neighbors. Idk.

I had an Icelandic (RIP Buddy), he would crow non stop if he felt uncomfortable or there were strangers on the property, BBQ's...parties etc. The wind blew the leaves he'd crow non stop, he'd crow during full moons and about 0430 every morning. During a 'normal' day he'd chime in about once an hour. My parents next door are very against any kind of noise, I even think they complain in the fall when the leaves hit the ground. We're way out in the wilds of New Hampshire so if it was my property alone I really wouldn't care if they didn't like it or not. You seem to have a much better relationship with yours so I'd disregard the previous comment!
Thing is, everyone asks and it just doesn't exist without inhumane means which I greatly discourage and frown upon. Roosters where bred and have evolved to crow, it's their thing in life and there is a reason for it. Its a bummer, I like roosters. With my last one, I got to the point you hear it, but you really don't at the same time. Get used to it after awhile. The stifling silence out here makes me insane. But, I'm thankful I can even have chickens.

Honestly, I don’t get it... this discussion is about which breeds crow higher and with biggest frequency, nothing else right? So why discuss everything else?

So, I’m gonna give the answer that most people should have already gave you, I actually don’t known.

So I went and Google: “different breeds of rooster crowing”... I found a feel videos on YouTube with large compilations of different breeds crowing, just like:

Sounds like a good idea to do even a deeper search to check if you can discover more about any specific breeds.

Anyone interested should check it out, I’m a hundred percent sure, different breeds crow with different frequencies, pitch’s and volumes so it’s good to choose wisely.

Of course, those and other videos are just a sort of guideline and a rooster will crow, but some breeds will for sure be extra louder when compared to others.

I have a Barnevelder that is 20 times more annoying than my Orpington, breeds do make difference just as they do with dogs, nobody can compare the annoyance of a Chihuahua barking to a quieter breed.
