it turns out my silkie hen has started to grow spurs. do silkies tend to crow alot? are their any ways to quiet their crowing? is it true that if you make the roost higher they cant bend their necks to crow? How much room should it be from the roof to the roost that he is on? how many times a day will they crow?

You can try quieting the crowing by soundproofing your coop, or keeping it dark in the coop till later in the morning. Not sure if that'll help much. Someone close to me has a rooster that crows all night long. I think I've read that the high roost does not work, but I've never had a roo, so just repeating what I've read here. I think the frequency of crowing is related somewhat to the personality of the roo. Good luck, post pix- maybe it is not a roo. I've seen posts that hens have spurs too.

when my silkie roo crows it sounds like someone is beating Tarzan. Good luck keeping him quite lol. He doesn't just crow in the morning either.

We regretfully rehomed our beloved little bantam rooster...now it's very quiet here. Kinda sad, though.

I have a little Mille flure mix roo who's 2 months old and he only crows when we leave. How did we manage that? Well he has a bird cage in our studio that he roosts in and when he started crowing in the morning we went and got a small squirt bottle filled it with some water and gave him a couple squirts with that. With that we have also trained him not to walk on the floor because hes quite small and really I don't like stepping in bird poo, now he flies from the top of his cage to the bed to wake me up in the morning. The only thing with the squirt bottle is you have to be a good aim and avoid hitting the poor bird in the face, it only takes a couple shots for them to get the idea. Also, I looked into it and you have have them de-voiced but that wont stop the crowing they will learn to crow again. This mean the only way to stop a roo from crowing is behavior modification. Hope that helps.

Update:
after 6 months old the squirt bottle no longer works... It just frustrates him... so I chose happy chicken over sleeping in...
