I am a 44 (almost 45) yr old man with NO clue about quilts. However, DW is on a "mission" to get a quilt for out queen sized bed. Room is painted a light green (called Sage I think). She is looking for DEEP rich colors, reds, greens, burgundies, golds, etc in a "not to country" looking pattern. She wants to use the quilt only (no dust ruffle (??)) so not sure if I will need a larger quilt than queen size.....I love my chickens, sell exotic hardwood flooring for a livin', but have NO idea about quilts other than the heirloom wedding ring quilt I have that my Great-grandmother made (has flour sacks for backing if my verbage is correct). Can anyone help me or make suggestions? Would love to buy from a fellow BYC'er if I can. Thanks in advance, sorry to ramble.

I'd love to get the DW a quilt, but not for $1000s of dollars.....LOL

I dont know what the market is in GA, but you can get them for less. I have got a couple at some of the Firehouse auctions for 350-400, Maybe bring her to Lancaster and find a less expensive(dont want to say CHEAP) one and have a road trip included. You will still spend the 1000 but its a nice visit.

Why don't you stop in at one of the quilt swaps and ask if anyone would make you one in colors she likes and what they will charge?

Or you could do like Marlin did and learn how to make your own blocks. You can do it your a crafty person. We would help you out and encourage you all the way.

If you want quality fabric and workmanship so that is washes and lasts a long time you will probably pay $600 to $700. Good quality fabric is around 7 to 9 dollars a yard. The backing alone will be 6 yards of fabric.
You can find one cheaper but you will get what you pay for in quality. There are alot of hours of labor, design etc. that goes into a good quality quilt.

I personally will not make a quilt for someone outside of my family and then only a gift as it is hard to really get paid for your time and effort.
