After 10 years, Rufus the guinea, died yesterday, I assume of a heart attack, while doing what he loved best; chasing the heck out of the flock. One minute he was flying through the air, running folks away from their food, with me chiding him for making Splash Gordon, the EE roo, cry. Next minute, he's sitting still on the ground, oddly allowing me to pet him, then his neck extends in death. It was a hot day, so I think he just overdid his usual harassment.

He was the Eddie Haskell of the flock. Everyone had a love/hate relationship with him. Chased and pulled tailfeathers, yet guarded hens as they laid, and herded everyone away from hawks. Once before, I thought he was dead after a rooster beat him to a bloody pancake, but he miraculously resurrected. Not this time. I kept wondering how long he could live. He was the oldest of the flock.

I bought him with his brother, Roscoe, whom I found dead beneath a tree, after a lightning storm. Originally, he and Roscoe would chase each other in circles, like roadrunners. When Roscoe passed, Rufus assumed the rest of the flock would take his place, but they didn't enjoy the game. No amount of water pistols would stop him. Now, they can chase each other around again in fowl heaven. He did have a peaceful look on his face.

Rest In Peace Rufus

Awww poor Rufus!!! This heat wave is why my girls can't even supervise free range! They love to fly across the yard after each other and I refuse to let them exhaust themselves. Very sorry for your loss!
