Raccoon attack **warning pictures on page 4**

Sorry. But I really believe you did the right thing for Hawkeye. She probably knew it too. Part of owning any animal is not letting it suffer. You did much more than I ever would have. I would not have been as brave as you were to even try all that first aid care! Good luck. Maybe one of your other hens will step up and take Hawkeye's place and scoot to you now!

She trusted you because she knew that you wouldn't fail her, and she was right - you never did. You did everything you could, everything right and cautiously, everything that you could until the only thing left to do was let her go. Even as that didn't go as planned, her waiting again for it meant that she knew. I'm glad you had the blessing of her waiting and accepting. You deserve that goodness for all the good you gave that little soul that couldn't take care of herself.

As for your snobby chickens, they'll learn. Mine used to all be like that, too. Go out and enjoy them, bribe them, and be glad for the fact that they're healthy enough to not give you the time of day. /wink

Still sending lots of hugs, and I'm pretty soggy eyed right now, so I'm going to stop typing.

Oh, Beth, I'm so sorry you had to go thru all that.

When my little cross beaked chickie had to go last week, I felt the same bittersweetness; she followed me around and depended on me ( and GDD) so much; of course she trusted me to help her at the end.
You are so much more of a good flock manager now, be glad of all your hard earned knowledge. (And we all learned alot with you!)

If my DH comes in and sees me weeping over my laptop, he's gonna freak...

But, I'm so touched by your compassion for your pet and so sorry for your pain. You're a braver woman than I. I could not have mustered that courage. I wish you comfort and peace!
